Bike Safety: Helmets

In our final post for Baby Safety Week, we are focusing on safety while on bikes and trikes!

I cringe when I see anyone on a bike without a helmet. I believe the risk is too great, our brains and lives are just too important to not simply donning a helmet while out on a bicycle. Some sobering statistics:

1. Riding without a proper helmet increases the risk of a serious head injury or fatal crash by 14 times.
2. The risk of brain injury is reduced 88% when wearing a proper helmet.
3. The risk of a fatal bike crash is reduced by 75% when wearing a proper helmet.

For some kids the biggest battle is simply to get them to WEAR the helmet, and thankfully several companies, like Raskullz and Nutcase, have created wonderfully thoughtful and adorable helmets for kids and toddlers that they will want to wear. As soon as my kids were old enough to sit on their tricycles, they did so with a Nutcase helmet on (actually we have the Dazed and Amused Nutcase helmets at home).
