Sleep Saviour: White Noise Machines

Do you use white noise for your kids? We do, but not to help our kids fall asleep. We use them so that our kids will stay asleep. When our second child was born, we were white noise machine converts and actually bought a portable white noise machine for on-the-go naps in addition to our stay at home machines.

When shopping for a white noise machine, make sure you keep in mind the intended use, where and when you will be using it, as well as the circumstances when a white noise machine would be great to have: at home in the crib, vacation, nights at grandma's, out at dinner, etc.

Our first child was a notoriously bad sleeper for the first year of her life, so we tried almost anything that could get her to fall asleep and stay asleep. One of the more useful items we tried to get her to stay asleep, and continue to use past her second birthday, is a white noise machine. Our daughter has been using the Tranquil Moments White Noise Sound Machine by Brookstone since she was born and we really like it. Effective, priced right, several volume levels to choose from, and six soothing sounds to choose from.

When our son was born, we were hooked to the benefits of a sound machine but needed one that was portable for naps on the go (the life with an on-the-go toddler and baby!). We found the portable and affordable Homedics Sound Spa Mini Portable Sound Machine a perfect fit for what we needed. Priced under $10, the Homedics Portable Sound Machine is a useful white noise machine that can be used almost anywhere.

We attach the portable machine to our son's car seat and can turn it on whenever he falls asleep while we are on an outing. The nice thing about the product is that it has white noise and three other sounds, as well as a timer shut-off switch.  Although it runs on batteries, we have not had to replace them yet after 4 months of use.

  1. While I'm not (yet) a mum, I love the white noise app available for the iphone - falling asleep to anything from a rainstorm to a purring cat is great to switch off from stress. It might also help save a few dollars to double up its use for little ones, without needing more gadgets, too...
